Vale and GravitHy to jointly develop carbon-neutral steelmaking solutions

Vale and GravitHy to jointly develop carbon-neutral steelmaking solutions

Brazil's Vale and GravitHy have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop carbon-neutral steelmaking solutions using Vale's iron ore briquette technology.

GravitHy plans to use the briquettes produced using Vale iron ore at its plant in Fos-sur-Mer in the south of France, which aims to start site preparations for construction in 2024 and commissioning in 2027.

With a capacity of 2 million tons per year, the plant will directly produce reduced iron using hydrogen as a reducing fuel, significantly reducing carbon emissions in the steel production chain compared to pig iron production via the integrated BF-BOF route.

Rogério Nogueira, Vale's director of product and business development, said the agreement reinforces Vale's confidence in the direct reduction route and the use of hydrogen to achieve the decarbonization of steel production.

Vale is committed to reducing 15% of its net Scope 3 emissions by 2035 and 33% of its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, and expects to be net zero by 2050.
