According to latest data from EDSM, Indonesia has surpassed its year target by producing 668.75 million tons of coal per year through December 27th, 2022. Actual production during the period is likely to be higher, as some producers do not immediately report production volumes.
Indonesian coal production has gathered strenght after ESDM imposed a month-long general ban on exports in January 2022 due to local supply congestion. Production increased throughout the year despite occasional interruptions from rain and heavy machinery shortages.
Indonesian GAR 4,200 kcal/kg prices hit a historic high of $154.21/t in October 2021, after hitting a historic low of $22.40/t in September 2020 when global Covid-19 lockdowns reduced demand. Prices have recovered from their y-o-y highs in 2021, but the GAR 4,200 kcal/kg prices averaged $85.27/tonne in 2022, up to December 27th, while it was around $66/tonne a year ago.
