Scrap exports of the European Union increased by 7% in 2023 compared to the previous year, reaching 18.53 million tons. In December 2023, EU scrap exports amounted to 1.61 million tons, a 41% increase compared to December 2022. The figures were 6% lower than in the previous November.

March in particular recorded the highest export volume of 1.72 million tons, while May recorded the lowest export volume of 1.05 million tons.

The EU's largest exporter of scrap to Türkiye, accounting for 57.1% of total exports, ranked first in the ranking of the countries to which the EU exports the most scrap. India ranked second, with EU exports to India reaching 2.24 million tons, a 64% increase compared to 2022. Egypt ranked third, importing 1.66 million tons of scrap, up 19% year-on-year. Pakistan reached an import volume of 796.3 thousand tons, up 3%. The US, with an import volume of 694.85 thousand tons, recorded a 93% increase compared to the previous year.

These developments underline the changes in the global scrap trade and highlight Egypt's prominence as the third largest importer.
