Decarbonisation of Tata Steel's UK plant expected to be completed within 3 years

In line with its decarbonisation strategy, Tata Steel plans to switch from the blast furnace (BF) method to the more environmentally friendly electric arc furnace (EAF) method in the UK.

Decarbonisation of Tata Steel's UK plant expected to be completed within 3 years

The move comes as the blast furnace process is nearing the end of its operational life and will be phased out over the coming months.

Tata Steel, headquartered in India, has the largest steel mill in the UK at Port Talbot in South Wales. The plant has an annual production capacity of 3 million tonnes and employs around 8,000 people in the country.

The company is currently in consultation with trade unions regarding this transition. In addition, various permits need to be obtained and infrastructure improvements need to be made. The process has already begun and the entire journey towards decarbonisation is expected to take around three years to complete.

Narendran, Managing Director of Tata Steel, said that the financial support of the UK government is crucial for the successful implementation of the decarbonisation plan. Also, when asked about the procurement of new plant machinery, Mr Narendran said that the company was in talks with several European suppliers to fulfil its requirements.
