Armenia extends metal export ban until 2025

The Armenian government has decided to extend the ban on exports of ferrous and non-ferrous metals until 30 January 2025. The ban, which was due to expire on 29 July this year, was extended for six months at a government meeting.

The decision's reasoning says that there are no large deposits of ferrous metals in Armenia, and local metal processing enterprises use scrap and waste as raw materials.

The main purpose of the ban is to ensure economical use of metal raw material base, development of local production and import substitution. According to the authorities, this will help regulate the export of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as create conditions for providing the domestic market with competitive metal products and the production of high value-added products.

Experience in recent years has shown that importing scrap or billets of ferrous and non-ferrous metals as raw materials is not economically feasible due to high prices for imported goods.
