The coal exports of Indonesia have decreased

In September, Indonesia's coal exports fell for the second consecutive month, dropping below 40 million tons.

In September, coal shipments to China reached a new low in over two years. Indonesia exported 39.95 million tons of coal, marking a 12.83% decrease compared to the previous year and a 3.77% decrease compared to August. However, in the first nine months of 2023, Indonesia's total coal exports reached 371 million tons, reflecting an 11.38% increase compared to the previous year.

In September, Indonesia exported 38.4 million tons of coal to Asian countries, constituting 95.7% of the total exports. China remained the primary destination for Indonesian coal, receiving 14.33 million tons, which was a 35.97% decrease from the previous year and a 23.73% decrease from August. In contrast, exports to India reached 10.57 million tons, showing a 48.37% annual increase and a 37.98% monthly increase. Exports to the Philippines decreased by 4.99% annually and 6.61% monthly, reaching 2.52 million tons.

Coal exports to South Korea decreased by 11.49% compared to the previous year but increased by 15.55% compared to August, reaching 2.21 million tons. Shipments to Malaysia increased by 16.5% compared to the previous year but decreased by 25.21% compared to August, reaching 2.01 million tons.
