Inventories decreased for the second consecutive month
Japan’s total steel inventories stood at 6.16 million mt at the end of July. The inventory level decreased by 261,000 mt from 6.42 million mt at the end of June, representing a %4.1 decrease in July. This marked the second consecutive monthly decrease in inventories.
Producers’ inventories decreased to 4.86 million mt at the end of July, down 243,000 mt month on month. Distributors’ inventories decreased by 18,000 mt to 1.30 million mt.
Inventories for domestic shipments decreased by 208,000 mt month on month to 4.92 million mt, while inventories for exports decreased by 54,000 mt to 1.24 million mt.
Rebar and flat steel inventories decreased
By product group, rebar inventories stood at 747,000 mt at the end of July. Inventories in this category decreased by 61,000 mt month on month.
Plate and sheet inventories decreased by 66,000 mt to 540,000 mt. Galvanized sheet inventories also decreased by 64,000 mt to 926,000 mt.
Cold rolled sheet and strip inventories decreased by 24,000 mt to 627,000 mt, while section inventories decreased by 33,000 mt to 421,000 mt. Steel pipe inventories decreased by 3,000 mt to 406,000 mt.
In contrast, hot rolled strip inventories increased by 12,000 mt to 1.67 million mt. Wire rod inventories also increased by 4,000 mt to 115,000 mt.
Limited annual increase
Japan’s total steel inventories stood at 6.13 million mt at the end of July 2025. Inventories increased to 6.16 million mt at the end of July 2026, representing an annual increase of 25,000 mt, or %0.4.
As a result, Japan’s steel inventories recorded a significant monthly decrease, while posting a limited increase on an annual basis.
