Tenova takes a leading role in Australia’s low-emission steel production

Tenova is taking a significant step toward sustainability in Australia’s steel sector. The company has been selected as the technology supplier for the large-scale NeoSmelt project, which aims to produce low-emission steel. Tenova will be responsible for the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) of the direct reduced iron (DRI) pilot plant at the heart of the project.

Tenova takes a leading role in Australia’s low-emission steel production

NeoSmelt is being developed under the leadership of a consortium backed by major industry players such as BlueScope, BHP, Rio Tinto, Woodside Energy, and Mitsui Iron Ore Development. The DRI pilot plant, designed to work in integration with Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF) technology, will be established in the Kwinana Industrial Area, south of Perth.

The facility will be designed using innovative ENERGIRON technology and is expected to operate with an annual capacity of 50,000 tons. The dual-fuel system, capable of using both natural gas and hydrogen, will allow for the testing of various carbon reduction scenarios. This technology is projected to offer flexible adaptation to changes in the energy infrastructure.

The plant will have the capability to produce high-metallization and high-carbon DRI, making it a preferred input for pig iron production. Additionally, it will process low-grade iron ore, which holds strategic importance for Australian mining. The plant's readiness for carbon capture technologies offers a critical advantage in meeting long-term climate goals.
