In its annual report for fiscal year 2024-25 (FY25), Tata Steel announced plans to start construction of a low-carbon electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking plant at its Port Talbot site in the UK in July 2025. The company expects the plant to be operational in 2027.
The annual report stated that the new plant, which will use recycled scrap, will reduce onboard carbon emissions by up to 90%. The planned EAF will have an annual production capacity of 3.2 million tons of low-emission steel, contributing to a total reduction of over 50 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the next decade.
Tata Steel stated that this structural transformation is integrated with cost rationalization and that it aims to reduce its fixed costs from £762 million in FY25 to £540 million the following year.
Drawing attention with performance as well as investments, Tata Steel reported that its newly acquired Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited has delivered a strong performance with ₹1,000 crore EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) and positive free cash flow. Commenting on the announcement, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Steel, emphasized that the company is taking environmental responsibility and financial sustainability together in its transformation process.
