Held in Santander, Steel Net Forum Iberia brought together around 200 steel industry representatives, once again highlighting the need for collaboration across the sector.

Steel Net Forum Iberia brought the steel industry together in Santander

The event, organized in cooperation with UAHE and EUROMETAL, brought together a broad cross-section of the steel value chain, from producers and distributors to traders and processors.

Rising uncertainty in the sector and the need for collaboration came to the forefront

During the two-day forum, key challenges shaping the European and global steel markets were discussed, while the impact of rapid economic, regulatory, and geopolitical changes on the sector was evaluated. Discussions also pointed to the high level of concern caused by uncertainty in the markets.

In his closing speech, Manuel Nobre, President of Açomefer, stated that the growth of the forum clearly reflects the need for stronger collaboration within the sector. Nobre emphasized that such platforms play a critical role in strengthening dialogue, increasing information sharing, and developing joint solutions to the growing complexity of the market.

One of the highlights of the forum was the “Call to Action” initiative launched by EUROMETAL. Participants stressed that this initiative, aimed at protecting the European steel value chain, should be supported.

CBAM and trade measures were at the center of discussions

Developments related to the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and new trade protection measures also featured prominently in the discussions. It was noted that these tools impose significant compliance requirements on the sector and require companies to adapt to a rapidly changing regulatory environment.

The forum also included assessments of the future of the European economy, highlighting the role of investments in infrastructure, energy, defense, and automotive sectors in enhancing competitiveness under the “Made in Europe” approach.

In his opening speech, Juan Rodríguez Garat noted that the current geopolitical environment is becoming increasingly unpredictable, pointing to the impact of growing global polarization on trade and industrial policies.

The market data presented revealed important insights, particularly regarding import trends and the effects of CBAM. The increasing share of steel-containing finished products entering the European market raised questions about the effectiveness of existing trade defense instruments.

The event concluded with a roundtable meeting involving participants representing different segments of the steel value chain. The discussion emphasized the need to strengthen complementarity rather than competition between producers and distributors, while highlighting the importance of clearer role definitions, differentiation, and value-added-focused strategies.

It was stated that the forum was held on April 27–28, 2026, and the next Steel Net Forum Iberia will take place in Cascais in 2027.
