Russia’s coal industry records losses exceeding 872 million dollars

Russian Deputy Energy Minister Dmitry Islamov announced that losses in the coal sector exceeded 70 billion rubles (approximately USD 872 million) in the first quarter of 2025. In an interview with the TASS news agency, Islamov stated that due to unfavorable conditions in the sector, the coal production targets set for this year have been revised.

Islamov stated, “The challenge now is maintaining last year’s production volumes. We are trying to sustain the levels reached in 2024.” Islamov noted that while Russia had aimed to increase coal production in 2024, the conditions in the sector have worsened.

Last year, Russia produced a total of 443.5 million tons of coal and exported 196.2 million tons. However, sanctions and the decline in global demand have further exacerbated the challenges faced by the coal sector.
