Price pressure and demand uncertainty in the global stainless steel market

As of July 2025, the global stainless steel market presents a complex and volatile outlook, shaped by regional differences and global economic and political developments.

Price pressure and demand uncertainty in the global stainless steel market

North America: Impact of Tariffs and Producer Price Hikes

In North America, prices for 304 stainless steel have risen to $2,630/st, marking a 2.5% increase compared to the previous month. This upward movement was significantly influenced by the U.S. government’s sudden decision in June to double import tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%.

The tariff hike has substantially raised import costs and enabled the country’s major stainless steel producers to raise their prices. Leading American stainless steel manufacturers implemented price increases ranging from $300 to $400 per ton. However, many buyers are struggling to fully pass on these hikes to their customers due to pre-existing fixed-price contracts and are being forced to renegotiate prices with suppliers for new purchases.

Regional Volatility in the Asian Market

In July, final product demand remained weak in key production centers such as China, India, and Southeast Asia.

In the Northeast Asian market, a major China-based supplier is offering 304 hot-rolled stainless steel at around $1,750/t CIF and cold-rolled at approximately $1,840/t. The company’s decision to temporarily suspend new offers at the end of July has further increased uncertainty regarding the supply-demand balance in China and the broader region, which is being closely monitored across global supply chains.

Türkiye and Europe: Stable Prices, Weak Demand

In Türkiye’s import market, prices are relatively stable in the $2,250–2,300/t range. While exchange rate fluctuations and regional demand variations cause minor pricing shifts, the overall trend remains steady.

In Europe, prices that hovered between €2,300–2,400/t in June slightly softened to €2,250–2,300/t by the end of July. Rising energy costs and increasingly stringent environmental regulations continue to drive up production costs, contributing to price fluctuations across the continent.

In Southeast Asia, 304 stainless steel prices fell by 2.9% to $2,360/t, while in the Middle East, they rose sharply by 4.9% to $3,000/t — a reflection of rising demand and supply constraints in the region. In India, prices remain stable at around $2,450/t, but continue to face pressure from high raw material costs and dependency on imports.

Regional Disparities and Future Outlook

Nickel and chromium price volatility continues to play a critical role in stainless steel production costs. Global supply chain disruptions and congestion at U.S. ports are causing delays in raw material sourcing. These issues are complicating production planning and driving up logistics and inventory management costs. Uncertainty in logistics and supply chains is adding further cost burdens, negatively impacting producers.

Regionally, manufacturers in the Midwest and East Coast of the U.S. are benefiting more from price increases due to high order volumes and limited supply, whereas buyers in import-heavy West Coast markets are struggling to pass these increases on to customers. Moreover, long-term contracts with fixed pricing are preventing some buyers from fully reflecting price increases, which is limiting overall market activity.

Looking ahead, potential tariff adjustments in the U.S., developments in raw material costs, and improvements in logistics infrastructure will likely be key factors influencing future price trends. Energy costs, global trade policies, and changes in production capacity are also expected to shape the overall direction of the market.
