Israel allegedly canceling steel orders from Türkiye

As the war between Israel and Hamas continues, Israel, one of Türkiye's largest steel export markets, is allegedly canceling its orders. This development raises some concerns in the iron and steel industry.

Some industry officials claim that Israel has canceled orders for steel products from Türkiye. Israel accounts for about 10% of Türkiye's total steel exports. A third of Türkiye's rebar exports in August went to Israel, while rebar exports to Israel totaled 480,800 tons in the January-August period.

This is likely to cause capacity problems for rebar and wire rod producers, especially in the Osmaniye and Payas regions.

At the same time, Israel is Türkiye's scrap supplier. August, when scrap material is destinated to Israel, plays an important role in Türkiye's scrap exports. However, it is stated that the war may lead to an increase in Israel's scrap supply in the medium term, but at the same time increase the risk of materials containing chemical or explosive materials.

On the other hand, a major Turkish producer supplying rebar to Israel has mentioned that there haven't been any issues or cancellations following the start of the conflict.

Turkish steel producers are concerned about the potential loss of their largest export markets at a time when the Turkish steel sector is already facing high production costs and demand contraction.
