The main reason for the capacity increase in the Kurdistan region was explained as very positive long-term expectations for rebar demand.
Iraqi Galiawa Group has announced the opening of the second rolling mill in the Van steel mill in Erbil, the main city of the Kurdistan region.
The facility has two rolling mills for the production of 8-32 mm rebar with a total annual capacity of 700,000 tons. "We have started commercial activities and we are already continuing sales," the company's representative told Metal Expert.
Van Steel is also currently equipped with an EAF-based steelmaking complex with a nominal production capacity of 750,000 tons/year.
The total investment in the Van Steel plant is estimated at $340 million. Galiawa Group received a license for the installation of the new plant in May 2020 and construction began in January 2021. The company plans to sell its products to domestic customers as it sees great potential in the Iraqi construction industry.
