Industry reaction to Canada's steel plan

The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) and the United Steelworkers Union (USW) said the new measures announced by the federal government do not fully meet the needs of the industry.

Industry reaction to Canada's steel plan

Catherine Cobden, President of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), and Marty Warren, Canadian National Director of the United Steelworkers (USW), issued a joint statement on the Canadian government's package of economic measures announced on June 19 to protect the steel and aluminum sectors, saying that the plan “falls short of meeting the needs of the industry at a most challenging time.”

The statement noted that a constructive dialog with the government will continue and that the details of the plan are under review. Both organizations underlined the need for stronger and more targeted solutions to the structural challenges facing the sector.

The USW is the largest private sector union in Canada with 225,000 members across all economic sectors and 850,000 members in North America. The union is known for negotiating for job security, fair wages, benefits and decent working conditions.

CSPA represents Canada's primary steel producers and some major steel consumers. The association advocates for the competitiveness and sustainability of the steel industry, which provides raw materials for many strategic industries, from automotive to construction.
