Iron and steel industry in Ukraine faces difficult times due to on-going war.

What is the current situation in Ukraine’s iron and steel industry?

Iron and steel industry in Ukraine is in a difficult situation due to its dependence on maritime export. Most of the enterprises in the industry are concentrated in the southeastern regions of Ukraine, where active military movements continue.

A heavy combat took place in Mariupol and the steel production was frozen in Zaporizhia and Kryvyi Rih, and only a small part of the industry is operating since.

The General Manager of Ukraine's largest mining and metallurgical holding Metinvest, Yuri Rijenko states that Ukraine's sectoral losses from the Russian war constitute 30-40% of its pre-war capacities. According to Metinvest, Ukraine has lost about 30-40% of its metallurgical capacity today, with Mariupol plants accounting for more than one-third of Ukraine's steel production.

Due to the closure of the Ukrainian ports, the export of steel products is out of the question. No rail capacity is available, as Ukraine's large volumes of metallurgical products have never been exported by rail.
