Türkiye's imports of semi-finished products rise while exports decline

Türkiye's July 2023 imports of semi-finished products increased by 40.25% compared to the same period of the previous year, according to the Turkish Steel Producers' Association (TÇÜD).

Imports of semi-finished products, which were 360,045 tons in July 2022, increased by 41.25% in July 2023. The import figure, which was 403,559 tons in June, increased by 26.03% to 508,570 tons in July.

Imports of semi-finished products, which was 2,885,687 tons in January-July 2022 period, increased by 36.64% to 3,942,642 tons in January-July 2023 period.

In the seven-month import period of this year, the highest semi-finished product import figure was reached in May with 798,170 tons.

Exports decreased by 84.41

However, Türkiye's exports of semi-finished products decreased despite the rise in imports. Exports decreased by 84.41% in July compared to the same month of the previous year. From 50,463 tons in July 2022, exports dropped by 84.41% to 7,882 tons in the same month of this year. While this figure was 10,693 tons in June, exports decreased by 26.31% in a one-month period.
This increase in imports and decrease in exports in Türkiye's steel sector stands out as an important development that should be taken into account for the future of the sector.
