With the entry into force of the Substitute Construction Materials Regulation in August, the German regulation on the use of electric arc furnace slag in road construction will change.
About 2.5 million tons of steel mill slag from steel mills in Germany, including electric arc furnace slag (EAF), is used in the construction of highways. With the entry into force of the Substitute Construction Materials Regulation in August 2023, the use of such by-products will change, especially in terms of assessing environmental suitability.
The "PROEOS 2" research project, led by the FEhS Building Materials Research Institute and the VDEh Operations Research Institute, demonstrated the possibility that EAF could be widely used in similar areas in the future, provided that it is used in previously tried and tested application areas that have studied the use of EAF from a metallurgical point of view. It has also proven in research that EAF can also be processed as a concealed hydraulic binder, a new CO2-saving product for the cement industry.
The research director from the FEhS Institute said: "According to our findings, EAF can continue to be used in road construction. This will benefit many sectors related to the industry, especially steel mills. Slag, provided it does not contradict the regulation that will come into force in August, It can even be used as a binder in cement after a special cooling process.
The General Director of the FEhS Institute said, "The results of PROEOS 2, as a contribution to a sustainable circular economy, have shown us once again that we are on the right track. On the one hand, we are on the right track. On the one hand, we produce high-quality products, on the other hand, we use secondary building materials to promote the protection of the climate and natural resources. areas and conditions are changing day by day," he said.
