NLMK opens a new service centre, NLMK South Africa, in Wadeville on the outskirts of Johannesburg. The factory will supply wear-resistant (NLMK Quard) and high-strength (NLMK Quend) thick sheet produced at NLMK Clabecq in Belgium.
The new unit aims to sell to the mining, machine-building and construction sectors in South Africa, as well as to Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola and Zambia. Anton van den Berg was appointed general manager of the service center.
Ilya Gushchin, NLMK Group Vice President, said: "The NLMK Group's near-customer geographic footprint has expanded to Africa to unite the entire continent. This region is considered one of the fastest growing and most likely markets. Our products on the African market include high-strength and wear-resistant steels and plan to expand our mix to include construction steel, steel for high-pressure vessels, tool steels and other products."
NLMK's consolidated final steel sales decreased by 3% y-o-y to 5.24 million tons in the first half of 2018, but semi-finished product shipments increased by 32% to 3.29 million metric tons.
