Ministry of Trade: Türkiye positively differentiated against new US tariffs

In the ministry's statement, it was reminded that tax increases ranging from 15% to 50% have entered into force worldwide, and it was pointed out that countries that do not have a trade agreement with the US will face higher tariffs on the products they export to the US as of this date. In the statement, "Türkiye has positively differentiated in the new customs duties. The fact that Türkiye continues to be one of the countries with the lowest tariffs in this new regulation shows that Türkiye is considered as a balanced and positive trade partner by the US, Turkish exporters maintain their competitiveness in global markets and Turkey's strong position in foreign trade continues. This situation creates a significant advantage for Türkiye compared to many countries, especially Asian and Latin American countries."

The statement also noted that the US side decided to impose a new 50% tariff on steel, copper and aluminum exporters, but this increase was limited to certain products such as copper pipes and cables. Products such as refined copper, ores and concentrates were excluded.

The ministry stated this sudden change led to a price drop and oversupply in the US copper markets. Noting that countries such as Canada, Mexico, Thailand and India are among the countries that the US has not yet reached an agreement on trade, it was shared that the tariffs against India will be applied with additional fines.

It was emphasized that intensive negotiations between Türkiye and the US are ongoing at diplomatic and technical levels regarding tariffs on strategic sectors such as steel, automotive and copper. The statement read "Negotiations to ensure lower rates in favor of our country continue constructively. Our contacts are also ongoing to ensure an opening in the form of meeting our expectations, especially for our textile and apparel sector."

The Ministry of Trade emphasized that Türkiye's priority is to ensure that foreign trade with the United States proceeds in a predictable, fair and sustainable framework. Finally, “As seen in the latest decree issued by the US President, Türkiye is among the countries whose negotiation process is progressing positively, which shows that mutual dialogue and cooperation in bilateral trade relations are strengthening.”
