An analysis of rebar capacity requirement in the earthquake zone

Murat Kurum, Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, stated that 4.511,000 independent sections and 1,250,000 buildings were inspected due to the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes and that 520,000 independent sections and 164.321 buildings were found to be demolished, urgently to be demolished and severely damaged.

An analysis of rebar capacity requirement in the earthquake zone

‘People living in destroyed, urgently to be demolished and severely damaged buildings stay in tents, containers, dormitories, lodgings of solid state and private institutions, hotels, dormitories and in different parts of the country, the construction of the houses will be started as soon as possible, construction will start gradually after the completion of ground surveys and inspections.’

One of the most curious issues was the question of whether the rebar produced in Turkey is enough for the construction of this region?

According to the statements made in the first moments, the need for 4 million tons of rebar was mentioned, according to the information from the region and the research of the SteelRadar correspondent, it was determined that this amount is only needed in the first place.

An expert from the sector replied as follows: ‘520,000 independent sections; If it is calculated as the average use of 4 tons of rebar per section, there is a need for 2,080,000 tons, that is, 2.08 million tons of rebar’.

“When we calculate the houses with medium damage and urban transformation, which were built according to the zoning law before 2000, and which need to be demolished and renewed even if they are intact, the prediction of 4 million tons seems correct, but in the first place, the need for 520,000 houses to be built, which means that the foundations are needed in the first six months. Together with this, the need processes that slow down quickly and then slow down are foreseen.'' He added.

So if we analyze the need of 2.08 million tons, will the regional factories meet this need?

REGIONAL IRON AND STEEL ANALYSIS

An expert analyst from the stakeholders of the sector continued his manufacturer-based assessments as follows;

When we evaluate the capacities of the facilities capable of producing crude steel in the region;

We can also take into account that TOSCELIK, Baştuğ, Iskenderun Demir Çelik, Ekinciler, Yazıcı, Koç, EEY Demir Çelik, PLATINUM Demir Çelik, Kılıçlar and Sivas Demir Çelik may also be supported.

Approximately, the production capacity of the region is 35,000 tons per day x30 days =1,050,000 tons/month.

In other words, the region has the capacity to produce 2.08 million tons of iron, which seems to be needed in the first place, in two months.

At this figure, TOSÇELIK can produce goods suitable for construction iron if it wants, or it can produce sheet metal, (a large amount of sheet metal is also needed for containers).

Isdemir can also coil some of the billet it produces and send it to external regions, dump the majority of it as billets and support local rolling mills to produce rebar.

At the same time, steel mats that will be needed for construction will also need to be produced from this coil iron.

Of course, many side factors can change these figures in the direction of plus or minus. He made a statement in the form.

If we evaluate the negative aspects, we can say the following;

As we mentioned in our previous analyses, the region was damaged in many ways, the facilities tried to repair the damaged parts, many of them started, one hundred percent of the capacity could not be completed yet.

The most important factor is the obligation to take care of the deceased or their relatives who died in the qualified technical teams of the factories, or the efforts made to solve the housing problems of those whose houses were destroyed or damaged, and difficulties such as moral losses, sufferings will take a long time.

Infrastructure problems also affect logistics

The problems experienced in the infrastructure also affect logistics, there are many intermediate products that factories have to supply to work, and the facilities that produce them were also affected by the earthquake.

In this context, hundreds of drivers providing transportation were also affected, and the iron and steel sector of the region is trying to solve many problems like this. Unfortunately, the spiritual losses will not come back, but an amazing dedication is being shown to ensure the continuation of life and that everyone can continue without losing their job.

Export orders and the need in the domestic market will be the most important issues of operation

The iron and steel plants in the region have ongoing orders from their customers, whom they have been supplying abroad for many years. Factories, some of which are working for domestic and some of which are working for export, are making various preparations to establish balances. While meeting the needs in the domestic market, an extremely meticulous work is being exhibited in order not to lose the export market that they have created for many years.

If the above calculations predict that there will be a need for two million tons of iron in six months, the crude iron capacity in the region should be 6 million tons in six months from 1 million tons per month. It can also cover the 4 million tons of exports that will increase and offset possible production losses.

It will support the needs in imported billets

Manufacturers stating that ’It is possible to put forward force majeure for export connections, but this would mean losing customers," manufacturers are also calculating to support intensive production with imported billets.

If we consider the positive aspects, we can say the following;

Billet imports from Russia or other countries can be easily processed by the competent rolling mills in the region. Sheet metals that will be needed in the region and that will be required for container manufacturing can be provided by TOSÇELİK TOYO, MMK Metalurji. Also, MMK hasn't started its smelter yet. The company, whose smelter has not been working since a while before the earthquake, was operating its sheet metal processing facilities. According to the comments from the sector, it is said that it may start its smelter in the near future.

It will not be a problem to produce the coils required for the wire mesh that will be needed, and the wire mesh manufacturers in the nearby region have to work at full capacity to meet these needs. There may be difficulties in sufficient capacity, but some supplies can be provided by imports. Only the shipping cost will increase a little.

It is said that the supply of pipes in the damaged infrastructure will also be sufficient, because products made from plastic raw materials can be used in some of them.
