According to the data of the Turkish Steel Producers Association, Turkey's scrap import volume in 2021 amounted to 25.07 million mt, up 11.5 percent year on year. The value of these imports increased 78.4% year on year to more than $11.16 billion.
When we look at the details of Turkey's scrap imports in December, the EU is the number one supplier with 52.2%, the USA is the second with 15% and the third supplier in the CIS with 10.6%.
Limited scrap imports from Italy
According to the latest information, restrictions were imposed on non-EU exports of a number of "critical raw materials" to be determined by the Prime Minister's decree upon the proposal of the Italian Ministries of Economic Development and Foreign Affairs.
Although the rates of countries such as Spain, Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina are increasing in Turkey's list of scrap suppliers, Italy's scrap exports to Turkey remain limited.
However, if this decision taken by the Italian government has an impact on the EU, an increase in scrap prices may be inevitable since Turkey's imported scrap resources will be limited.
The main countries from which Turkey imports scrap in 2021 can be seen in the table below:
Total tonnage imported in January-December (thousand mt) Change on an annual basis (%)
USA 3,768 -13.7
EU 13.099 +9.7
CIS 2,655 +8.8
England 2.357 +3.2
Other 3,193 +118.69
Total 25,072 +11.5
