Under the agreement, Danieli will supply an Energiron Zero Reformer direct reduced iron (DRI) plant with an annual production capacity of 2 million mt of hot briquetted iron (HBI). The facility will operate using hydrogen and will be supported by an electric gas heating system.
The low-carbon hydrogen required for the plant will be produced on-site by GravitHy. The HBI produced will be used in electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking and will feature a metallization rate of up to 96% and a carbon content of 1%, meeting the requirements of the steelmaking process.
With a total investment exceeding EUR 3 billion, the GravitHy project has reached another milestone as Danieli announced it has received the official notice to proceed with basic engineering activities for its scope of supply.
Danieli's scope includes the hydrogen-ready Energiron technology, jointly developed with Tenova, as well as an electric gas heating system designed to further reduce the carbon footprint, water treatment equipment, and material handling systems.
The new plant is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2030. It will be located in the Fos-sur-Mer industrial port area in France, adjacent to Marcegaglia's Mistral minimill project, which will produce hot rolled coil (HRC) using electric arc furnace technology. Marcegaglia's facility is also being built by Danieli.
