Under the program, 50% of eligible transportation costs for the shipment of eligible Canadian steel and steel products between provinces and territories by rail or marine transport will be reimbursed.
The Canadian government has launched the Commodities Sectoral Support Program to facilitate the movement of domestic steel products within the domestic market and support businesses in reaching customers across the country.
CAD 100 million has been allocated to the program, which was announced by Canadian Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons Steven MacKinnon.
Under the program, which began on August 10, 2026, 50% of eligible rail or marine transportation costs for the shipment of eligible steel and steel products between Canada's provinces and territories will be reimbursed.
The program will continue for up to one year or until the allocated funds have been fully utilized.
Support covers only eligible Canadian-origin products
Steel or steel products benefiting from the program must be of Canadian origin and transported to a destination in Canada.
For rail transportation, the support will apply to interprovincial carload shipments. For marine transportation, non-containerized cargo will be eligible under the program.
Any organization that bears the freight charges for the transportation of eligible goods will be considered a “shipper” under the program and will be eligible to apply for reimbursement.
Applications began to be accepted as of August 10, 2026, and the program is expected to continue until summer 2027 or until the available funds have been fully claimed.
Movement of Canadian steel in the domestic market to be supported
The measure is also part of the government's efforts to strengthen interprovincial trade, support Canadian supply chains and build a more resilient economy.
MacKinnon pointed to the need for Canada to adapt to changes in global trade, stating that the new incentive would help businesses strengthen their position in the domestic market.
The Canadian government also announced that support for the forestry sector would be increased following consultations with the industry.
