Germany's crude steel production decreased y-o-y in July

Germany's monthly crude steel production was down 0.5% y-o-y to around 2.96 million mt in July, indicating weaker output for the second consecutive month, WV Stahl reported on August 21.

The July total was 1.1% lower than in June due to a slowdown in industrial production and sluggish market demand.

Crude steel output from blast furnaces (BF) increased 6.1% y-o-y to 2.26 million mt in July, while output from electric arc furnaces (EAF) decreased 17% y-o-y to 694,000 mt.

In the January-July period, crude steel output from EAF was 6.31 million mt, down 11% y-o-y, while output from BF decreased by 1.1% to 15.24 million mt.

Pig iron production increased by 4.8% y-o-y to 2.08 million mt, while annual output to end-July was up 0.1% to 14.25 million mt.

Hot rolled coil production in July was 2.54 million mt, down 6.3% y-o-y. From January to July, coil production decreased by 5.7% to 18.77 million mt.

Demand for coil decreased in July due to sluggish market demand and the presence of a significant amount of imported products awaiting customs clearance.
