World crude steel production decreased by 6.5% in January

World crude steel production in January 2026 decreased by 6.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 147.3 million tonnes (Mt).

World crude steel production decreased by 6.5% in January

World Steel Association (WorldSteel) announced the January 2026 crude steel production figures. According to the data, crude steel production in 69 countries decreased by 6.5% year-on-year in January 2026, reaching 147.3 million tonnes (Mt).

Africa’s crude steel production increased by 5.8% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 2.0 million tonnes. In the Asia and Oceania region, production fell by 8.6% to 107.6 million tonnes. The EU (27) recorded a 2.3% decline to 10.3 million tonnes, while production in other European countries rose by 4.4% to 3.7 million tonnes.

The Middle East’s crude steel production increased by 12.6% to 4.8 million tonnes. In North America, production decreased by 0.6% to 9.2 million tonnes. Production in Russia, other CIS countries, and Ukraine fell by 8.6% to 6.5 million tonnes. South America produced 3.4 million tonnes of crude steel, down 1.2%.

China’s production down 13.9%

China’s crude steel production is estimated to have decreased by 13.9% year-on-year in January 2026, reaching 75.3 million tonnes. During the same period, India’s production increased by 10.5% to 15.1 million tonnes, while the United States recorded a 3.3% rise to 7.1 million tonnes.

Japan’s crude steel production in January declined by 0.5% to 6.8 million tonnes, while South Korea’s production increased by 5.0% to 5.6 million tonnes. Russia’s production is estimated to have fallen by 7.4% to 5.5 million tonnes.

In the same period, Türkiye’s production rose by 5.8% to 3.4 million tonnes, while Germany’s production increased by 15.0% to 3.1 million tonnes. Brazil’s production decreased by 1.4% to 2.7 million tonnes, and Iran achieved a 15.1% increase to 2.6 million tonnes of crude steel production.
