EU plans embargo on Russian coal

The European Union (EU) will propose to ban coal imports from Russia after Russia's Bucha attack.

EU plans embargo on Russian coal

According to sources familiar with the matter, the European Union plans to ban coal imports from the country due to Russia's war crimes in Ukraine.

The details and timing of the coal ban are still being negotiated, sources said. However, despite the increasing pressure, it was stated that the EU did not evaluate the sanctions on oil and natural gas for now.

EU officials are expected to hold talks this week on a variety of topics, such as strengthening the measures taken and taking various steps. The European Commission also plans to ban Russian-flagged ships and trucks from entering the Union countries.

There are some divisions among EU countries over the sanctions to be imposed on Russia. Some countries, such as Germany and Hungary, oppose the plan to expand sanctions on the Russian energy sector. The approval of all 27 countries is required to ban coal imports.

The same plan includes the introduction of EU export controls for technologies used in the defense sector and some key sectors. With the new plan, the EU will impose additional sanctions on more Russian companies, including banks, and on Russian individuals.
