Australia demands that coal miners set aside some of their production for local needs

Government officials have announced that Australia's most populous state will require coal miners to reserve up to 10% of production for the domestic market as part of a national move to limit rising energy prices.

Australia demands that coal miners set aside some of their production for local needs
In December, the Labour government led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese approved legislation to limit natural gas prices for a year and reached agreements with the coal-producing states of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland to set an upper limit on the price of coal sold to power plants.
New South Wales Treasury Secretary Matt Kean said the state would require coal miners, who are not currently selling to the domestic market, to set aside 7% to 10% of their production for local use.
Thailand's Banpu firm Centennial Coal and Peabody Corp are the main suppliers of coal to power plants in the province.
Other major coal miners in the state include BHP Group, Glencore Plc, Whitehaven Coal, Yancoal (YAL. AX) and New Hope Corp.
