The Gelado Project, a project to convert waste into a saleable product, is important to Vale's strategy to transition to higher quality ores, which require less energy to process. The scrap metals that Vale SA has extracted from a waste dump in Carajas since 1985 will be converted raw materials for a pellet plant that will be used in blast furnaces to produce steel.
The cost of the project will be $485 million and the initial production capacity will be 5 million tons per year. With this project, the company will be able to take the lead in providing cleaner materials to its customers. The plant is expected to reach an annual full capacity of 10 million tonnes by 2026.
