US Steel will sign an agreement with its new partner!

American steel company US Steel has announced that it plans to sign an agreement with an as-yet-unnamed partner to build 500,000 tons of commercial pig iron per year at Gary Works in Indiana.

US Steel will sign an agreement with its new partner!

Commissioning of the new unit is scheduled for the first quarter of 2023.

At the same time, US Steel will not officially build new blast furnaces and does not plan to recommission previously discontinued units. Because such actions can be criticized by climate NGOs for increasing carbon dioxide emissions.

According to US Steel, the pig iron that will be smelted in the new furnace will be used to melt steel in electric furnaces at Big River Steel in Arkansas and a new mini mill with a capacity of 2.7 million tons per year.

The upcoming activities will allow US Steel's iron ore reserves in Minnesota to be used in electrical steel production. Although the company considers this project a small one, it hopes to master the production of reduced iron (DRI / HBI).

Also speaking to foreign sources, CEO David Burritt said, "US Steel continues its R&D studies to expand its high value-added flat product production."
