Türkiye’s imported scrap market sees prices move higher

Low stock levels and limited raw material availability are supporting interest in ferrous scrap, while Türkiye’s imported scrap prices have moved higher.

Türkiye’s imported scrap market sees prices move higher

Imported scrap prices in Türkiye are moving higher, supported by developments in the raw material market and supply constraints affecting alternative sources. Limited availability of Russian-origin billet, slab and pig iron is supporting Turkish steelmakers’ interest in scrap as a raw material.

Meanwhile, tightening supply in China’s coking coal market and rising prices are supporting higher Chinese steel prices, while also pushing billet offers in the Far East higher.

The price gap in the billet market remains one of the factors limiting Turkish mills’ ability to bid more aggressively for scrap. However, mills’ inventories remain at minimum levels, while difficulties in securing alternative raw materials continue to support demand for scrap.

In recent transactions, European-origin HMS 80:20 scrap was traded at around $382/t in the Marmara region, while US-origin HMS 80:20 scrap reached around $390/t in the İskenderun region. These transactions indicate that prices in Türkiye’s scrap market continue to maintain an upward trend.

Market participants expect scrap prices to see further modest gains as long as current supply conditions and low inventory levels persist.
