Bekaert has signed a preliminary agreement with Sardinia-based industrial engineering and metal processing company Nuova Icom for the reindustrialization of its Macchiareddu plant.
Under the agreement, Bekaert’s Macchiareddu plant is expected to be transferred to Nuova Icom, while Bekaert employees at the facility are expected to be rehired under the terms set out in the agreement.
Changes in the tire industry affected production
Bekaert stated that structural changes in the tire industry in recent years have affected market demand and the competitive position of its tire reinforcement plant in Sardinia.
The company said that production activities at the plant have gradually declined as a result of these developments and that tire cord production is no longer viable under current market conditions.
Bekaert said it has been evaluating solutions that could provide a sustainable future for the plant and support the continuity of employment in the region. The agreement with Nuova Icom was signed as a result of this process.
The company also stated that it recognizes the importance of the transition process for employees, their families and the local community, and will continue the ongoing discussions in a constructive and collaborative manner.
The transfer of the Macchiareddu plant is expected to be completed in October 2026, subject to the completion of the consultation process and the fulfillment of customary conditions.
