Thyssenkrupp to supply green steel to Knauf Interfer

Knauf Interfer and thyssenkrupp Steel Europe have signed an agreement for the purchase of CO2-reduced steels.

Thyssenkrupp to supply green steel to Knauf Interfer

The agreement concerns the group's Knauf Interfer Stahl Service Centre, Knauf Interfer Cold Rolling and Knauf Interfer Automotive Blanks units. Starting this year, thyssenkrupp Steel Europe plans to supply the units with steels with a significantly lower CO2 footprint through the use of specially processed scrap under thyssenkrupp's Bluemint Recycled brand.

Bluemint Recycled reduces CO2 emissions by around 64 per cent compared to conventional hot-rolled strip and is available in all grades and gauges. Knauf will supply quality steel from the Pladur brand in hot-rolled strip, cold-rolled sheet, hot-dip and electrolytically galvanised sheet and coil-coated quality steel with organic strip coating. This will enable the distributor to calculate product-specific emissions in the Scope 3 category.

From the end of 2026, Knauf will also purchase steels from the Bluemint Steel product family, which are produced by direct reduction using green hydrogen.

"The significant reduction in the CO2 footprint of our pre-products is an important milestone in the decarbonisation of the entire chain," says Domenico Marino, chief operating officer of Knauf Interfer. Marino adds that Knauf relies on efficient trimodal logistics, short delivery routes thanks to conveniently located plants and optimisation of the scrap route from local production.
