The shipment of the core catcher belonging to El Dabaa NPP has been completed

Egypt's first nuclear power plant, El Dabaa NPP, has reached the building lot of the core catcher to be used in the 1st power unit with the design and construction of ASE AŞ, the Engineering Unit of the Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom.

The shipment of the core catcher belonging to El Dabaa NPP has been completed
The first Egyptian-owned nuclear power plant, the El Dabaa NPP, has begun construction in the Mediterranean coastal city of El Dabaa, 300 km northwest of Cairo.
The Power Plant, which will have 3+ generation 4 units of VVER-1200 type (pressurized water reactor) with a power of 1200 megawatts each, is the latest generation technology that has been successfully operated. Reactors of this type are located in Novovoronezh and Leningrad NPP in Russia, as well as in Belarusian NPP with a power unit with a reactor type VVER-1200, which was connected to the grid in November 2020.
According to the contracts, which become valid on 11th December, 2017, the El Dabaa NPP will be built by Russian partners in accordance with the benefits of the contract. Nuclear fuel will be supplied by Russian partners throughout the entire life cycle.
According to the articles of the contract, the Russian partners will build a special warehouse and supply containers for the storage of spent nuclear fuel. In addition, the terms of the agreement include that the NPP and the Egyptian partners will provide assistance in the training of personnel and operational and service support in the first 10 years of operation.
The core catcher, which is the first heavy and large-sized equipment of the NPP, is one of the main elements of passive safety systems. The core catcher can safely hold parts of the molten core in the event of an emergency, preventing them from leaving the reactor building enclosure. The equipment, which was installed in the first three units of Akkuyu NPP built in Mersin, stands out as a part of the state-of-the-art nuclear power units with 3+ generation VVER-1200 designs.
