The countdown has begun; all imports will be covered by CBAM

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanısm (CBAM), which was prepared within the scope of the climate package in Europe and which is closely related to Turkish exporters, will primarily cover iron, steel, cement, fertilizer, aluminum, hydrogen and electricity production.

The countdown has begun; all imports will be covered by CBAM

The European Commission clarified the important points regarding CBAM, which was prepared within the scope of the “Fit for 55” climate package and which is also closely related to Turkish exporters. According to the warning to Turkish exporters, exporters who will sell products to the EU will have to report emissions embedded in materials subject to CBAM from 1 October 2023, but will not pay a financial cost.

When the final system becomes fully operational in 2026, EU importers will have to declare each year the amount of materials they imported into the EU in the previous year and the amount of embedded emissions and submit the corresponding amount of CBAM certificates.

First products to be included

CBAM will be introduced gradually and will initially be applied to a specific product group with a high risk of carbon leakage. Iron, steel, cement, fertilizer, aluminum, hydrogen and electricity generation will be the first products to be covered. Imports from all countries outside the EU, including Turkey, will be covered by CBAM.
