Opel stops production in Eisenach due to chip supply problem

German automaker Opel has announced that it will suspend production at its factory in Eisenach, Germany, until the New Year due to the problem of semiconductor chip supply.

Opel stops production in Eisenach due to chip supply problem

In a statement from Opel, it was stated that the plant in Eisenach will be closed from next week until at least 2022 due to problems in the supply chain and global chip shortage.

Production will resume next year at the factory where Opel's Grandland model is produced, "to the extent the supply chain situation allows," the statement said.

On the other hand, automobile manufacturing, one of Germany's most important industries, is adversely affected by disruptions in supply chains, particularly the scarcity of semiconductors required for modern cars.

According to research by consulting firm AlixPartners, the shortage of semiconductor chip supply will cause $210 billion in turnover loss in the global automotive industry this year.

Due to the chip crisis, it is expected that there will be a production loss of 7.7 million vehicles in the automotive industry this year.
