In the January-August period, US scrap exports to Mexico increased by 99% (1.16 million tons) to 2.34 million tons, while scrap exports to Turkey decreased by 24.4% (727,000 tons) to 2.25 million tons. Thus, in 2021, Mexico overtook Turkey and became the largest scrap export market of the USA.
The 107% increase (556,000 tons) in US scrap exports to Vietnam is also noteworthy. The US scrap exports to China, on the other hand, have increased by about 3 times, but are still at a low level of 91,000 tons.
Turkey has been the largest scrap export market in the USA since 2006. Before 2006, S. Korea, Canada, Mexico and Thailand were at the top of the USA's scrap exports.
