Malaysia's Eastern Steel recently announced that it has officially started construction of a new 1,450 mm hot rolled strip mill in Kemaman, Terengganu.

Malaysian Eastern Steel is building a new hot rolling mill

It was stated that the new facility has a design capacity of 3.5 million tons/year and can reportedly produce 4 million tons per year. The main products include structural steel, weathering steel, patterned steel strip, boiler and pressure vessel steel, pipeline steel, high-strength steel for automobile structure, marine steel, etc.

As an important part of the company's second phase project, Jianlong Group believes it will be of great importance for Eastern Steel to expand its industrial chain, upgrade its value chain and improve its competitiveness in the market.

A company source said that Eastern Steel's second phase will be completed and put into operation in September or October, increasing its crude steel capacity by 2 million tons to 2.7 million tons/year. This means current capacity is 0.7 million tons/year, but the source said production could amount to 0.8 million tons/year.

In the long term, Eastern Steel plans to reach 5 million tons/year crude steel capacity by 2027, four years after the target set in 2018.
