Hydnum Steel will establish a Spanish green steel plant

Spain's Hydnum Steel (HS) plans to build the first green steel plant on the Iberian Peninsula. The project, which is a partnership of Helvella investment company Siemens, ABEI Energy and Russula Corporation, will be located in Puertollano in the Castilla-La Mancha region. ”The plant will be designed from scratch to use non-fossil energy throughout the production process, thus gradually incorporating green hydrogen into the production process with the aim of significantly reducing CO2 emissions, " explains HS.

”The production will be in line with the sustainable development goals in the steel sector and the circular economy, recycle scrap as raw materials, minimize water use and value the waste and by-products generated during production processes," HS said.

As a technology partner, Siemens will offer digital solutions related to the design, production and maintenance phases of the facility.

ABEI Energy's contribution will focus on green hydrogen production and will also develop renewable projects on photovoltaic technology and wind energy use. Service supplier Russula will be responsible for the engineering and full automation of the facility.

The facility will cover an area of 1.3 million square meters. The project will be worth 1 billion Euros and will provide direct employment opportunities for 400 people. In the first stage of development, it is estimated that HS will invest €600 million. The plant is expected to be operational in 2026 so that the company can access European financing.
