According to market representatives, Malaysia has started HRC production projects to increase its annual steel production to 2.7 million/tonne. Currently, approximately 700,000 tons of semi-finished products are produced annually at the blast furnace facilities in the two provinces of the country.
Malaysia's second blast furnace is expected to be operational in the second half of 2023. The furnace, which will be 1,380 cubic meters, will enable the production of close to 2 million tons of hot strip and slab per year.
The country's domestic iron and steel firm Eastern Steel plans to sell most of its produced HRC domestically rather than export it. The company, which also plans to use HRC for its pipe production operations, imports 1.6 million/ton hot rolled coils per year.
