On Wednesday, voestalpine celebrated the inauguration of its state-of-the-art specialised steel plant in Kapfenberg, Austria, the first of its kind to be newly built in Europe for forty years.

Voestalpine commissioning new speciality steel plant

According to the company, the plant is one of the most advanced in the world in terms of digitalisation and sustainability. The plant is a technological milestone, pioneering high-performance materials for the automotive, energy and aerospace industries, the company says. Voestalpine says it meets the most advanced Industry 4.0 standards with around 8,000 process data that are continuously captured, implemented and evaluated in parallel.

Until the certification process is completed, the plant will operate in test mode in parallel with the old plant. It will be fully operational in fiscal 2023/24 with a capacity to produce 205,000 tonnes of special steel per year for highly sophisticated customer segments.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 2018. The investment amounts to approximately €467 million ($493 million). As previously reported, the challenging business environment during the Covid-19 pandemic and difficulties in the delivery of key equipment led to an increase in the originally planned €350 million investment.
