US companies complain about ferrosilicon imports

US ferrosilicon producers are seeking protection against "dumping" from Russia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Brazil.

US companies complain about ferrosilicon imports

Ferroglobe and CC Metals and Alloys, the only US producers of ferrosilicon, have applied to the US Department of Commerce requesting an anti-dumping investigation into ferrosilicon shipments from Russia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Brazil. Both companies play a key role in US ferrosilicon production and claim that products from these countries threaten their business.

According to US foreign trade statistics, ferrosilicon shipments from the four countries totalled 144,200 tonnes in 2023, down 2% from the previous year but up 20% from 2020 and 2021. Russia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Brazil and Canada remain the main suppliers of ferrosilicon to the US market, with their combined share reaching about 63.5% in 2023.

Russia, which has been the largest supplier of ferrosilicon to the US for the past five years, is particularly remarkable. In 2023, shipments from Russia reached 82,900 tonnes.

The US ferrosilicon market is currently experiencing a crisis in the Port of Baltimore due to the collapse of the bridge structure and the blocking of ships' access to the port. This port was the largest terminal for ferrosilicon imports. Ships are now going to Norfolk, Virginia, but insufficient storage capacity in this region is becoming a problem.

US producers claim that the price spread on ferrosilicon sourced from Russia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Brazil is as high as 212%, which is seriously damaging the local industry.
