Türkiye is Europe's second largest coal consumer

Last year, the increase in coal consumption for electricity generation enabled Türkiye to surpass Poland, one of the top coal consumers in Europe, and rank second after Germany.

Türkiye is Europe's second largest coal consumer

According to data shared by the think tank Ember, Türkiye produced 17.6 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity by burning coal in 2023 and reached a record level of carbon dioxide emissions with 118 million tons. In the same period, 117.9 TWh of electrical energy was produced with coal in Germany and 97 TWh in Poland.

The reason for this change in the ranking of the countries that use the most coal in Europe was that Germany and Poland turned to other energy sources, while Turkey preferred to produce energy from coal, which is less costly, due to its current economic situation.

The amount of coal Türkiye imports from Russia increased

According to data received from CPs that monitor shipping activities, Türkiye's total coal imports last year remained the same as the previous year, reaching approximately 39.3 million tons. The share of Turkey's coal imports from Russia increased from 46 percent in 2022 to 58 percent in 2023 and reached 22.8 million tons. In 2018, this share was recorded as only 22.8 percent. While Turkey increased its coal imports from Russia, it decreased its coal imports from Colombia, South Africa and North America.

Experts predict that Türkiye will continue to depend on coal imported from Russia in 2024 due to the increasing cost of using renewable resources such as wind and solar energy. This shows that Türkiye has the potential to be the largest coal consumer in Europe.
