Turkiye's scrap imports decreased

Turkish steel companies’ scrap imports decreased by 22.3% in September 2023 compared to the same month of 2022, reaching 1.07 million tons.

Turkiye's scrap imports decreased

More than 99% of September imports (1,064 million tons) consisted of old scrap grades. The average price of this raw material was $371.5/t, down from $386/t in September 2022 and $392/t in August 2023.

In September, the largest supplier was the United States, supplying 300,000 tonnes, down 15.4% from the previous year. The Netherlands shipped 117.4 thousand tons of scrap to Turkiye, compared to 90.6 thousand tons in September 2022. Great Britain contributed 93.92 thousand tons, an increase of 77.4% year on year, while Germany tripled annual increase with  more than 84.4 thousand tons. Denmark supplied 74.6 thousand tonnes, down 35.2% compared to the previous year.

In the January-September 2023 period, Turkiye's scrap imports decreased by 16.4% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 14.1 million tons. During this period, the main source of raw materials was the USA, contributing 3.25 million tons. The Netherlands ranked second and Belgium ranked third.

This decline in scrap imports was associated with low capacity utilization of local steel plants in the second half of 2022.
