The USA steel imports fell in April

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), based on preliminary US statistics, national steel imports in April 2022 amounted to 2.48 million tons, which is 11.7% less than in March and 3% more than in April 2021. Until March, US companies reduced their imports of rebar, semi-finished products and all flat product categories.
Overall, however, during the four months, the US received 10.17 million tons of steel products from abroad, which is 21.0% more than in the same period last year. During this period, only semi-finished product imports increased by 26.0% and decreased to 2.11 million tons. At the same time, imports of finished steel products reached 8.06 million tons, up 45.1 percent year on year.

Compared to January-April 2021, imports of wire rod in the United States increased almost 2.5 times (to 602.1 thousand tons), cold rolled steel and oil and gas pipes increased by about 90 percent, and imports of tin increased 80 percent. In addition, American companies increased their purchases of standard pipes, galvanized steel and beams from abroad more than 1.5 times. At the same time, the Americans most actively imported galvanized steel - 1.066 million tons in four months.

Among suppliers of steel products to the United States, it has traditionally been dominated by continental neighbors - Canada and Mexico, which accounted for 38% of imports in the January-April period. Brazil decreased sales by 35.5% compared to the first four months of last year (due to the decrease in exports of semi-finished products), but remained in third place. South Korea is next, followed by Vietnam.

According to AISI, Russian companies shipped 292,000 tons of steel products to the US in four months, an increase of 1.3 percent compared to the same period last year. But in March and April, the volume of supplies was just under 50 thousand tons per month.
