Tata Steel to develop hydrogen metallurgy in the Netherlands

Indian steel group Tata Steel said it will implement hydrogen-assisted reduced iron technology at its Ijmuiden steel plant in the Netherlands.

Tata Steel to develop hydrogen metallurgy in the Netherlands

This project is implemented to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at the facility. Previously, Tata Steel had promised to reduce them by 5 million tons per year, or about a third, by 2030. To this end, the company aimed to build one or more electric arc furnaces to replace the blast furnaces, especially in Ijmuiden.

Deciding in favor of the hydrogen project, Tata Steel announced that the company has abandoned its previously announced initiative to develop technologies for capturing and storing carbon dioxide under the North Sea off the Dutch coast. The first phase of the pipeline, which will pump 3 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, was expected to start in 2027.

According to the CEO of Tata Steel T.V. According to Narendran, hydrogen metallurgy will drive greener steelmaking. The company plans to begin developing a feasibility study for the project in the near future.
