Tata Steel Nederland launches low-carbon packaging steel on new TCCT line

Tata Steel Nederland (TSN) announced that it has commissioned a new production line that enhances sustainability in packaging steel manufacturing.

The company’s proprietary and patented Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology (TCCT) enables packaging steel to be produced in compliance with future chemical regulations. With this technology, TSN is setting the standard for sustainable packaging steel in Europe and is also supplying TCCT to other steel producers.

Commenting on the importance of the new line, Arne Hoogervorst, Packaging Director at Tata Steel Nederland, said:
“Our TCCT technology makes sustainable production of packaging steel possible and ensures compliance with future chemical regulations. This is good news not only for the environment, but also for our employees, as it creates a safer working environment.”

Hoogervorst also highlighted TSN’s polymer-coated packaging steel product Protact®, adding:
“Protact® offers an environmentally friendly solution that meets the strictest food safety standards and simplifies our customers’ production processes, as no additional lacquer layer is required. This means lower costs, fewer chemicals, and a shorter supply chain. Together with our customers, we are developing innovations for a more efficient, safer, and more sustainable future.”

Packaging steel stands out for both safety and high recyclability. In the Netherlands, more than 95% of packaging steel is reused in steelmaking. Thanks to steel’s magnetic properties, it can be easily separated from waste streams, further supporting the circular economy. Its ability to provide long shelf life in products such as food cans also helps reduce food waste.
