Moroccan steel producer Somasteel announced the expansion of its production facility in Nouaceur, south of Casablanca, as part of efforts to boost domestic steel production and strengthen industrial integration. The new investment was inaugurated during a ceremony attended by Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour.
As part of the project, a new electric steel furnace has been installed at the site. The investment, valued at 760 million Moroccan dirhams (USD 76 million), is expected to increase the plant’s annual billet production capacity to 400,000 tonnes, with the output to be used in the production of reinforcing steel for construction.
The expansion will also enable Somasteel to increase its direct workforce from 250 to 850 employees, while creating approximately 1,800 indirect jobs in the surrounding region.
Minister Mezzour stated that the investment supports competitive domestic production aimed at reducing imports and is aligned with Morocco’s objectives of strengthening industrial sovereignty and advancing the Industry 4.0 transformation.
Somasteel’s Chief Executive Officer, Khalid Machrah, said the new facility allows the company to bring billet production in-house, marking a key step in strengthening its production chain. He also emphasized that the plant was fully designed, installed, and commissioned by Moroccan engineering and technical teams.
With this investment, which contributes to the “Made in Morocco” industrial strategy, Somasteel plans to enhance local value added by integrating the entire process, from scrap recycling to the production of reinforcing steel.
