Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, a subsidiary of German steel company Salzgitter AG, and Canadian mining company Baffinland Iron Mines signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in green steel production. According to the statement made by Salzgitter, the companies aim to explore the use of Nunavut high-grade iron ore in the production of low-carbon steel. Emphasizing the importance of having high quality iron ore to produce green steel, the company cooperates with the mining company Baffinland Iron Mines in this direction. In the statement made by Salzgitter, it is stated that Baffinland iron ore has first-rate metallurgical properties and superior chemistry.
Aiming to gradually switch steel production to hydrogen based processes from 2025 as part of the SALCOS Salzgitter Low CO2 program, the Salzgitter Group aims to switch to practically carbon-free production by 2033.
