Panzhihua Iron and Steel produces China’s widest titanium alloy plate

One of China’s leading steel producers, Panzhihua Iron and Steel, has achieved a significant technological milestone in domestic manufacturing. The company has successfully produced the widest titanium alloy medium and heavy plates ever manufactured in China.

Panzhihua Iron and Steel produces China’s widest titanium alloy plate

Panzhihua Iron and Steel has successfully produced large-format TC4 titanium alloy plates measuring 30 mm in thickness, 3,800 mm in width, and 9,700 mm in length. With this achievement, the company became the first domestic producer in China capable of manufacturing titanium alloy plates with a width of 3,800 mm. The final products demonstrated excellent performance in terms of structural integrity, surface quality, and dimensional accuracy, all meeting the required design standards.

Titanium alloys are widely used in industries that demand high performance, such as aerospace and marine engineering. In the marine sector in particular, there is growing demand for titanium alloy plates exceeding 3,000 mm in width. However, rolling such large plates presents significant technical challenges, including issues like surface cracking, making the production process highly complex.

To overcome these challenges, the research team from Panzhihua Iron and Steel collaborated with the National Technical Team of the Heavy Plate Division at Ansteel Co., Ltd.’s Bayuquan Branch. Together, they developed specialized insulation molds for titanium alloy plates and optimized the heating and rolling parameters. As a result, they successfully overcame the key technical barriers.
